Funduq Al-Mughannin
'L'auberge des chanteurs'

Studio 1

Showtimes: 11 December 2009 - 20:15

Pierre Vaiania, sax player and winner of the Django d’Or 2009 for best established artist, pursues his untiring musical experimentation. Within a triangle of influences – jazz, his Sicilian roots and the cultures of the southern Mediterranean – he has been working for several years with musicians from the most varied horizons. He compares these encounters to the tradition of funduq, those Mediterranean inns where singers, poets, musicians and merchants once met. These concerts are like musical voyages in the spirit of those original encounters.

This autumn, Vaiana will be releasing his album Funduq al –Mughannin – the Singers’ Inn, accompanied by a concert tour. For his stop at Flagey, he will be accompanied by the great Tunisian singer Zohra Lajnet, a specialist of the Bedouin songs of the Tunisian south, Oriana Civile, who uses her amazing voice to explore the Sicilian repertory for women, and Mario Incudine, a young musician and singer who favours feverish tarentellas. Last but not least, tambourine master Carlo Rizzo, who has been working since the very start on Vaiana’s funduq project, along with pianist mate Salvatore Bonafede.

Pierre Vaiana sax soprano, Salvatore Bonafede piano, Carlo Rizzo tamburelli, Zohra Lajnef, Oriana Civile chant, Mario Incudine mandolin, chant, Manolo Cabras, bass, Omar Adela, percussion, Saif Maayoufi, ney, Nidhal Jaoua, qanun
