‘Stabat mater dolorosa’ – The Mother was Standing… Among the most poignant Latin hymns, it has been and still is a source of inspiration for countless composers. The Flemish Radio Choir performs three of its finest versions, written close in time but thoroughly different in their treatment of the theme. Listen online.

Alessandro Scarlatti’s is the most luminous and upbeat.The version by his son Domenico is meditative and sombre while Pergolesi’s operatic style has made it a top hit on classical lists for decades. It was his last work before he died of tuberculosis aged 26.
