Jiang Wen’s first film as director, a melancholy chronicle about a summer in Beijing, seen through the eyes of a group of privileged adolescents, while the Cultural Revolution rumbles on behind them. An evocation of the past that is less political critique than a humorous, sensitive interpretation of a period. Rarely shown outside China and well worth catching.
