An avalanche of poison-pen letters reveals the sordid underside of a French provincial town. After the Liberation, Clouzot was banned from working for six months because the film had been funded by a Nazi-run studio and allegedly used as anti-French propaganda. Nowadays this lucidly pessimistic film of French society in the 1940s usually makes list of the masterpieces of that decade. Pierre Fresnay and Ginette Leclerc at the peak of their form.
