It was thanks to Louis Jouvet that the studio doors opened once again to Clouzot, after the ostracism that followed Le Corbeau. He immediately reconquered his position at the top of French film with this psychological thriller bringing together the Parisian underworld, music hall and the crime police. Based on the novel by SA Steeman, Clousot creates an expressionist atmosphere and a highly unattractive portrait of humanity. The trio made up of Jouvet/Blier and Delair is a winner.
