In this heart-wrenching masterpiece, Ingmar Bergman brings together four women. One of them is about to die of cancer; the other three (her two sisters and a servant) are at her bedside. While Agnes (Harriet Andersson) experiences terrible pains, Karin (Ingrid Thulin) and Anna (Liv Ullmann) recall tormented memories and past insecurities. The servant, Anna (Kari Sylwan) is the only woman to remain dauntless until the end. Conveying a sombre and terrible beauty, Cries and Whispers is Bergman at the very peak of his art and his existential questionings. The acting is intense and magnificent, as is Sven Nykvist’s camerawork.
