Abderrahmane Sissako - Mali / USA / FR - 2006 - fiction - color - 115' - OV - STT FR / NL
Malian director Abderrahmane Sissako, who made the meditative “Waiting for Happiness”, directs a highly original, deeply resonant film. In an inner courtyard in the capital of Mali, Bamako, an alfresco tribunal of African civil society – the witnesses - takes on the international financial institutions – the defendants. The hearings are broadcast around town via loudspeakers. And yet Sissako avoids any didacticism by bringing in the private lives and problems of various neighbours, producing a deeply humane and vividly pedagogical tale.
