Played with Steve McQueen at the top of his form with a soundtrack by Lalo Schifrin. Peter Yates directed and keeps the low-key tension as taut as a catapult.

Directed in 2009, Chen Kaige acknowledges this as the twin of Farewell My Concubine. Like the main character in that 1993 Cannes prizewinner, the main character, Mei Lanfant (who died in 1961) was a star singer at the Peking Opera, also performing many of his roles were in drag. In this magisterial work, Chen depicts the man’s dogged rivalry with another singer and his ultimate triumph on Broadway.
