'Encounters at the End of the World' - Unreleased Documentary

Studio 5

Werner Herzog - USA – 2007 – documentaire – kleur / couleur – 99’ – OV / VO – NL OND / STT FR

Discovery Channel produced this documentary by Werner Herzog who travelled to Antarctica with cameraman Peter Zeitlinger to meet the scientists carrying out research on the glacial tip of the world. Among the scientists and hangers-on are some highly eccentric characters, working away on their ideas and experiments and having fun doing things like climbing into a volcano. A fascinating movie and yet another chapter in Herzog’s explorations of the ends of the earth.

'Ascenseur pour l’échafaud' - Blue notes and crime movies

Studio 5

Louis Malle - Fr – 1957 – fictie / fiction – zwart-wit / n&b – 91’ – OV / VO – NL OND / STT FR

A young woman wanders through a harshly-lit night-time Paris. The expression on the face of a man stuck in a lift. It’s enough to hear Miles Davis’s wonderful score to remember images from one of the earliest films of the Nouvelle Vague, a highly aesthetic thriller graced with the powerful presence of Jeanne Moreau and Maurice Ronet. And then there’s Davis’s mythical improvised music on the soundtrack.

With: Maurice Ronet, Jeanne Moreau, Lino Ventura
