His programme takes in romanticism and symbolism, with Frank’s Symphony vying for attention with Paul Dukas’s Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Baritone Thomas Bauer will take on the Man from la Mancha in Ravel’s Don Quichotte à Dulcinée. The cherry on the cake will be Sergei Istomin, Anima Eterna’s cellist in the heart-aching solo of Fauré’s Elegy. A custodian of the great European symphonic tradition for 75 years, the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra has enjoyed a remarkable career. Right from the outset, its history has been associated with that of radio broadcasting. In a very different audiovisual environment, the government of Luxembourg took over the orchestra in 1996, placing it within a foundation specially created for this purpose, the Henri Pensis Foundation, which was named after the orchestra’s first musical director.
