Anima Eterna Brugge
Jos van Immerseel

Studio 4

Jos van Immerseel has put together a musical portrait of Paris from 1888 to 1933. His programme takes in romanticism and symbolism, with Frank’s Symphony vying for attention with Paul Dukas’s Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Baritone Thomas Bauer will take on the Man from la Mancha in Ravel’s Don Quichotte à Dulcinée. The cherry on the cake will be Sergei Istomin, Anima Eterna’s cellist in the heart-aching solo of Fauré’s Elegy. A fervent believer in period sounds, Van Immerseel will undoubtedly ensure that the scores shine with their original lustre.

Festival Ars Musica 2010
Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra

Studio 4

A custodian of the great European symphonic tradition for 75 years, the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra has enjoyed a remarkable career. Right from the outset, its history has been associated with that of radio broadcasting. In a very different audiovisual environment, the government of Luxembourg took over the orchestra in 1996, placing it within a foundation specially created for this purpose, the Henri Pensis Foundation, which was named after the orchestra’s first musical director.

‘Stabat mater dolorosa’ – The Mother was Standing… Among the most poignant Latin hymns, it has been and still is a source of inspiration for countless composers. The Flemish Radio Choir performs three of its finest versions, written close in time but thoroughly different in their treatment of the theme.

Magik Malik Orchestra

Studio 4

Flute player Malik Mezzadri has opted for a continual exploration of new musical paths, from urban sounds and house pulsations to groove and pop. He always plays with outstanding musicians, improvisin or taking them through pieces he himself has written. With his sixth instalment Saoule he once again displays his talent by taking two divergent approaches: a more traditional style, mixing lullabies with urban rhythms, and a more experimental vein that explores the very heart of jazz music: he calls this « XP ». On top of that, Mezzadri has an exuberant and unpredictable stage presence.

Anouar Brahem 'The Astounding Eyes of Rita'

Studio 4

'The Astounding Eyes of Rita' marks the return of alchemist Anouar Brahem with a new musical formation. A worthy follow-up to his previous work, this cycle fills its own time-space. The thrilling dialogue between Brahem’s oud and Klaus Gesing’s clarinet is softly enhanced by percussion. Flirting at the edge between jazz and eastern genres, Brahem mingles melodic lines and weightless sonorities.

Brussels Philharmonic
'Contrastes'

Studio 4

Olivier Messiaen ‘Les offrandes oubliées’, Robert Schumann Celloconcerto op. 129, Franz Schubert Symphony N°4, Maurice Ravel Boléro

Full of contradictions ? Messiaen’s first published work is a symphonic meditation for orchestra at times slow and painful, at others lively, ferocious, almost breathless. Grandiloquent? Marie Hallynck will display her virtuosity in Schumann’s eloquent cello concerto, a sweepingly inventive score that uses all the instruments technical ressources.
