A tragedy about pathological jealousy, Henri-Georges Clouzot’s L’Enfer would have been a revolutionary film. In 1964, he was planning new visual effects to evoke the madness of the character played by Reggiani. The film was never made; conflicts on the set scuppered it. Serge Bromberg has brought the completed images to the screen, and they are even more outstanding than imagined with some splendid rushes featuring Romy Schneider.

Manu Riche / Renaat Lambeets - B – 2009 – documentaire – kleur / couleur - 75’ - VO / OV NL - STT FR
Musical documentaries form a genre in which Belgium holds a proud position. Tom Barman, frontman of the Antwerp band dEUS for one, is a film-lover who directed the cult movie Any way the wind blows (2003). For two years, Manu Riche and cameraman Renaat Lambeets filmed him on and off stage in the hell hole that is Forest National, the Werchter festival site and world tours, but also at home with his mother and sister. This is fly-on-the-wall approach, and the tempo is frenzied, spontaneous and, naturally further heightened by dEUS’s music.

Henri-Georges Clouzot - F – 1943 – fiction / fictie – n&b / zwart & wit – 90’ – VO / OV FR
An avalanche of poison-pen letters reveals the sordid underside of a French provincial town. After the Liberation, Clouzot was banned from working for six months because the film had been funded by a Nazi-run studio and allegedly used as anti-French propaganda. Nowadays this lucidly pessimistic film of French society in the 1940s usually makes list of the masterpieces of that decade. Pierre Fresnay and Ginette Leclerc at the peak of their form. Eric Pauwels - B – 2009 – documentaire – couleur + n&b / kleur + zwart & wit - 180’ (+ entracte 10’) – VO / OV FR
This film is like a depiction of the mental universe of the director. Lyrical, elegiac and didactic, it uses Ulysses as the emblem for various imaginary journeys, some dreamt, others read, some filmed, others not. Like a Bayeux tapestry of the soul, this is a film of the films that Pauwels made and didn’t make but that haunt his imagination, the first person narration adding to the gentle, evanescent poetic mood. The novels of Borges feel close. With : Jean Rouch, Boris Lehman

First film by Briton Peter Strickland who sets his unnerving story in idyllic and wild Romanian countryside. The titular heroine sets out with her son sets out in search of the men who raped her 10 years earlier. At once a road movie, a nature ramble, a tale for adults about guilt and a harsh story of revenge, Strickland’s film has many moods and tones, underlining that the relationship between victim and perpetrator is never simple… With: Hilda Petèr, Nobert TankòTickets: € 7 – cut price: € 5,5

Henri-Georges Clouzot - F – 1957 – fiction / fictie – n&b / zwart & wit – 124’ – VO / OV FR – NL OND
A spy comedy that bombed when it was first released, although it was later to serve as inspiration to a number of film directors. A kafkaesque piling-up of absurdities, the film once again reveals Clouzot’s black humour and meticulous casting.
