Clouzot takes the original story by crime writers Boileau-Narcejac and turns it into a set-gripping, nerve-wracking drama. A tyranical school director (the chilling Paul Meurisse) is having an affair with one of his students (Simone Signoret). His wife (Véra Clouzot) seems to accept the situation until the two women form a pact. The characters are truly abject and the direction is as tight as a tensed rope.

A tragedy about pathological jealousy, Henri-Georges Clouzot’s L’Enfer would have been a revolutionary film. In 1964, he was planning new visual effects to evoke the madness of the character played by Reggiani. The film was never made; conflicts on the set scuppered it. Serge Bromberg has brought the completed images to the screen, and they are even more outstanding than imagined with some splendid rushes featuring Romy Schneider.

Michael Cacoyannis adapted this Greek tragedy by Euripides two years before directing his blockbuster Zorba the Greek. Electra (the splendid Irene Papas) witnesses the brutal murder of her father Agamemnon by her mother Clytemnestra, and hatches a plan for revenge. Quincy Jones wrote the tune Toots Thielemans (in Flagey at 12.04!) plays on the harmonica at a crucial moment. The novel was by Jim Thompson
