Le groupe des XX

Chausson's Concerto for violin, piano and string quartet gives a higher priority to the form of the sextet than to the orchestra as the English-speaking tradition tends to make us believe. Chausson wrote this work in reference to the eighteenth-century French music and particularly to the concerts of Couperin, a composer from whom he drew inspiration several times. However, Chausson's work is nevertheless in the aesthetic line of his master César Franck. Through its emotional richness, the concerto is one of the most human musical oeuvres for chamber music of the late nineteenth century.
