River Road is the story of two Yugur ethnic minority brothers, Adikeer and Bartel, and their journey travelling through the Hexi Corridor of the Silk Road to go home to their parents.

In their trek from their grandfather’s home near town to the distant grasslands where their parents have moved to find pastures to herd their sheep, the brothers are confronted with barren landscapes, abandoned villages, and decaying relics. Their journey becomes a search for their identity as Yugurs. The changing environment of the Corridor exposes the loss of grazing lands to industrialization and traditions to a modern world.

Towards the end of their journey, a chance encounter with an elderly Buddhist llama has profound consequences, and opens up possibilities for the beginning of a new journey that Bartel and Adikeer must undertake, one into unexplored territories from which they can never return to the home of their ancestral past.

阿迪克尔和巴特尔是一对兄弟，哥哥巴特尔出生一年后，阿迪克尔出生了。因为忙不过来，父母只得将哥哥送去爷爷家抚养。到了上学的年龄，父母与爷爷商量决定送兄弟二人去同一所学校上学，藉此建立手足情谊，可他们却从不说话。

爷爷去世了，暑假来了，其他孩子都被接回家，父亲却没有出现。阿迪克尔决定和巴特尔一起上路，寻找在草原上的家。他说父亲曾教过，放牧时如果迷路，一定要顺着河流走，只有在有水的地方水草才会茂盛，牧民的家一定在水草丰茂的地方。

两人骑着骆驼上路了，一路历经奇特的风景，也屡屡陷入困境和冲突之中。这趟路途，和他们记忆中的已完全不同。在未知的旅程里，兄弟间的心结是否可以解开。他们的家还在水草丰茂的地方吗。
