August 1957. Hiroshima. In the darkness of a room a couple lie naked, entwined. She is French, she is 30, she came to Hiroshima to star in a film about peace. He is Japanese. She talks to him of Hiroshima but he keeps telling her “you saw nothing at Hiroshima”... Very few films claim a place so quickly in the collective memory and in such a lasting, poignant way. Fragmented writing, incantatory dialogue: Resnais and Duras open up new avenues to the language of film. UCC Grand Prix 1960.
