For 30 years, DAAN has been surprising his loyal audience with a whirlwind of musical genres, ranging from pop noir to indie rock, electro to country, beats and ballads—mostly in English, but occasionally also in French or Dutch. Those looking for a common thread in his work will discover in this theatre tour that all these songs share something essential: often melancholic yet simultaneously humorous lyrics filled with visual metaphors (DAAN is also a graphic artist), driven by a storm-like urge to transform them into almost baroque musical paintings.
This tour distills his entire repertoire in a stripped-down musical setting: DAAN at the grand piano or guitar, Isolde Lasoen—his long-time musical muse of 25 years—on vibraphone, drums, trumpet, bells and angelic vocals, and the virtuoso Jean-François Assy, known for his work with artists such as Alain Bashung, William Sheller and Yann Tiersen, on his distinctive, atypical cello.
The more intimate seated venues allow DAAN to come closer to his audience, taking the time to share the stories behind his colourful life journey and mysterious lyrics. In doing so, the crooner creates a theatrical cabaret filled with emotion and ecstasy. No two evenings are ever the same, as DAAN reinterprets not only his extensive repertoire of over 300 songs, but also his favourite covers—treating them as if they were his own children.
For those who missed the “Simple” tour—a major sold-out live success and double platinum album—or for those who wish to continue the journey, DAAN returns to the stage this winter, with new vinyl releases and brand-new songs.
