In France, making fun of those in power has become a risky business. Over the past thirty years, the most outspoken comedians on television and radio have been systematically neutralised, marginalised, censored and even sacked. In both the public and private media, the same pattern repeats itself: satire is tolerated as long as it doesn’t bite. As soon as it takes aim at those in power, the microphone is cut off. From the Canal+ studios to the France Inter studios, via the corridors of France Télévisions, and from the reign of Nicolas Sarkozy to that of Emmanuel Macron, this documentary traces the mechanics of a campaign to silence dissent, which speaks volumes about the true state of freedom of expression in the French broadcasting sector.
