Three hundred years ago, on Good Friday 1727, Johann Sebastian Bach’s St Matthew Passion was performed for the first time at St Thomas Church in Leipzig. Since then, the work has become an essential landmark of the Easter season for music lovers. With an unparalleled sense of drama and human emotion, Bach transformed the story of Christ’s Passion into music that has lost none of its expressive power to this day. It is precisely this enduring power that lies at the heart of Teodor Currentzis and the Utopia Orchestra’s interpretation. Through striking contrasts, a pronounced dramatic arc and unmistakable intensity, they approach the St Matthew Passion as a living masterpiece that continues, three centuries after its creation, to speak directly to listeners.
