An exuberant ode to spring

Brimming with springtime energy, Vaughan Williams and Britten shake off the winter chill. In a tribute to the power of nature,  they draw upon diverse voices from the past to celebrate the awakening of nature and the eternal cycle of life. From hushed echoes to a triumphant finale: welcome to spring.

In his Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, Ralph Vaughan Williams reimagines a sixteenth-century hymn. By dividing the orchestra, he creates a magical echo within the music, evoking dreams of ancient English cathedrals.

And then, spring arrives! Benjamin Britten unleashes his boundless imagination in the Spring Symphony, bringing together a large orchestra, three vocal soloists, a full choir, and a children's choir. The transition from somber winter to a spring full of new life is celebrated with a collective, exuberant joy. This is no gentle stream, but a powerful, unstoppable force of nature that decisively banishes the winter. Written in the immediate aftermath of the dark war years, it is a refreshing explosion of joy—not just for the season, but for a hopeful future.
