Following a sold-out performance at Ancienne Belgique, conductor Tom Cohen returns to the Brussels stage for a curated symphonic evening dedicated to Moroccan classical heritage. Hosting a specialized classical ensemble alongside Strings of the Brussels Philharmonic, the gala concert will take place at the historic Flagey cultural center.

The performance brings together two distinct artistic voices to explore the shared musical histories of the Mediterranean. Under the direction of Maestro Tom Cohen, the program features a unique orchestral language that bridges Western classical instrumentation with the intricate traditional Maqams of North Africa. Though not Moroccan by birth, Cohen's extensive work within the region and deep technical respect for the genre have established him as a trusted collaborator among the North African musical elite.

Centering the evening’s repertoire is the celebrated Moroccan vocalist Sanaa Marahati. Renowned for her mastery of the Melhoun and Gharnati traditions, Marahati serves as an ambassador for the Maghreb's intangible cultural heritage. Her long-standing stage collaboration with Cohen offers audiences a refined musical synthesis, where traditional vocal poetry is framed by meticulous, expansive symphonic textures.

"This concert is an extension of an ongoing cultural conversation within Belgium," says Tom Cohen. "Our previous showcase in Brussels demonstrated a genuine local interest and an open, warm reception to high-caliber regional classical music. With this performance, we aim to naturally broaden the local landscape, offering a sound that is both structurally grand and deeply intimate."

Reflecting the project's emphasis on community integration and continuity, the concert will also feature a performance by The Flagey Academy Youth Choir. By involving young local singers in this classical repertoire, the project opens a creative window into a rich shared heritage, utilizing the collaborative nature of orchestral music to foster long-term connection.

Driven by a strong personal commitment to the timely relevance of this cultural initiative, the upcoming gala at Flagey represents a meaningful milestone for cross-cultural classical programming in Belgium.
