Double Bill : Joel Ross ‘Good Vibes’ + Immanuel Wilkins

Blue Note Records Night

Joel Ross undoubtedly establishes himself as one of the emblematic figures of the Chicago jazz scene. On his third album with Blue Note, titled The Parable of the Poet, the talented vibraphonist presents a vast suite consisting of seven evocative movements. Through the use of collaborative improvisation and collective melody, this intuitive bandleader highlights the unique talents of the artists with whom he shares the stage.

“Ross’ playing erupts through the layers of lush arrangements like consistent currents of electricity, high-powered and full of luminous energy” — DownBeat

The music of saxophonist and composer Immanuel Wilkins is filled with empathy and conviction, bonding arcs of melody and lamentation to pluming gestures of space and breath.
The 7th Hand, included among the 10 Best Jazz album of 2022 by The New York Times, explores relationships between presence and nothingness across an hour-long suite comprised of seven movements. The 7th Hand derives its title from a question steeped in Biblical symbolism: If the number 6 represents the extent of human possibility, Wilkins wondered what it would mean — how it would sound — to invoke divine intervention and allow that seventh element to possess his quartet.
