Youth Orchestra Flanders

Youth Orchestra Flanders

First times

This concert is full of firsts. In his Symphony No. 1 ..., e poi c'era ..., Luc Brewaeys laid the foundation for his symphonic language. Rustling sounds form a base layer that he colours with overtones – the rich harmonic spectrum that spontaneously resonates with a fundamental tone. At times, the music balances on the edge of audibility; at others, it surprises with violent booms and shrill chords. Igor Stravinsky also experimented extensively with timbre in the fairy-tale ballet L’Oiseau de feu, which was his first success with Parisian audiences. Ten years ago, the young violinist Joshua Brown was noticed for his interpretation of Dmitri Shostakovich's first violin concerto. He was barely 15, but already left a lasting impact. No wonder he became the second laureate and audience favourite of the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2024. There are no better compagnons de route for this adventurous concert than the young musicians of Youth Orchestra Flanders, who take their first steps in the orchestral world.

‘Had he played from behind a curtain, you wouldn’t have believed that Joshua Brown was only 15. His interpretation of Dmitri Shostakovich’s first violin concerto was so maturely wrought that it might have come from a seasoned professional. Brilliantly played and expertly paced, Brown’s performance checked into every emotional corner of the work.’ –  clevelandclassical.com
