Starting with the scars left on the body of Abidin Ertuğrul, her partner, filmmaker Nathalie Borgers reconstructs the tense atmosphere that prevailed in Turkey before the coup d'état of 12 September 1980 and the increasingly tangible repression that followed, drawing parallels with Erdoğan's rise to power and the current authoritarian regime. Using international archive footage and conversations, Scars of a Putsch traces the tradition of democratic movements in Turkey, which have persisted despite state violence.
