Grave of the fireflies
Isao Takahata
This Studio Ghibli masterpiece is dreamlike and poignantly beautiful. It juxtaposes the horrors of the immediate post-war period with moments of happiness: the corpses in a devastated city, Setsuko's emaciated body, the pleasure she feels when eating sweets, and a cloud of fireflies illuminating the dark cave where they live.
This cult anime is based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka, who wrote the book in tribute to his sister, who died of malnutrition following the bombing of Kobe.
