Danish Classical Highlights and Peer Gynt Suites

Join the Brussels Chamber Ensemble in this concert showcasing the gems of Danish and Scandinavian classical music!

The first half of the programme will spotlight some of Denmark’s most exciting classical music. The concert opens with Niels Gade’s In the Highlands Overture—a richly romantic work inspired by the landscapes and folk traditions of Scotland, imagined through the lens of a 19th-century Danish composer who never actually set foot there. Filled with sweeping melodies and rhythmic folk-like themes, the overture captures the Romantic era’s fascination with distant cultures and national identity.

This is followed by the world premiere of the winning composition from the Brussels Chamber Ensemble’s Composition Competition for Danish composers.

The first half concludes with Axel Jørgensen’s Suite, op. 22—a bold and dramatic trombone concerto that showcases the instrument’s unexpected lyrical beauty. Composed by Jørgensen, a prominent Danish trombonist of his time, the work will be performed by Jesper Busk Sørensen, the Danish member of the world-famous Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

For the second half, the orchestra turns to Scandinavia more broadly with Edvard Grieg’s beloved Peer Gynt Suites No. 1 and 2. A student of Niels Gade, Grieg was deeply influenced by his mentor’s musical language—an influence that echoes in the vivid Scandinavian soundscapes of these iconic works. From the dreamlike Morning Mood to the haunting Solveig’s Song and the adrenaline-fueled In the Hall of the Mountain King, these suites contain some of the most instantly recognisable melodies in classical music—and promise to leave the audience exhilarated.

The Brussels Chamber Ensemble consists of professional and semi-professional musicians, all enjoined by their love for music-making.
