Shabaka / Hervé Escario

Solo(s)

Expo | Hervé Escario

The life of a jazz musician is always intimately linked to the sound of the band, but also to solitary moments.

“Solo(s)” illustrates these moments of grace in which Shabaka Hutchings stands alone in front of his audience. When Fred Hersch seems to speak to his piano, Michel Portal retreats to the corners of a theater to warm up his bass clarinet and keep his nerves at bay.

“Solo(s)” is also the ecstasy of Abdullah Miniawy (Le Cri du Caire) as he listens to Peter Corser’s solo.

“Solo(s)” is a small story of jazz that aims to reveal how the intensity of each musician’s emotions breathes life and soul into the sound of the band.

Flagey

Jazz has been a constant in Hervé Escario’s daily life since the age of 12, when he accidentally placed an Archie Shepp vinyl on a turntable.

The second artistic shock came with the discovery of photographs by Josef Koudelka, Roy DeCarava, and Marc Riboud.

Black-and-white photography of jazz musicians, but also of circus performers and dancers, quickly became a natural choice.

Winner of the 1st prize at Jazz World Photo in 2023 and 2025, Hervé Escario regularly collaborates with jazz musicians (Emile Parisien, Henri Texier, Yoann Loustalot, Sylvain Rifflet…) for album and press photography, and collaborates with numerous festivals (Tourcoing Jazz, Brussels Jazz Festival, Jazz in Marciac, Jazz en Nord…).
