Sounds of Cyprus and Beethoven’s 5th Symphony
Brussels Chamber Ensemble in Cyprus Presidency Concert
Join the Brussels Chamber Ensemble for a concert celebrating the music and culture of Cyprus, presented on the occasion of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council to the European Union. This programme brings together the true gems of Cypriot music and Beethoven’s 5th symphony, one of the most iconic works in orchestral history, marking the close of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The programme opens with a vibrant showcase of music rooted in the heritage and contemporary creativity of Cyprus. Audiences will be transported from dawn to dynamic folk-inspired traditions, starting with Solon Michaelides’ Avgi ston Parthenona (Sunrise at the Parthenon), a work suffused with radiant lyricism and evocative imagery. The orchestra will then premiere Savvas Savva’s Cypriot Suite, a new work commissioned by the orchestra specifically for this concert, adding a fresh voice to the island’s musical landscape. Following this, the Brussels Chamber Ensemble partners with the Hellenic Choir of Brussels, soprano Anna Mathioudaki and baritone Alex Panayi in spirited renditions of five famous Cypriot folk songs, arranged for symphonic orchestra and choir, including beloved examples such as Ta Rialia, Chrysoprasino Fyllo and Tilirkotissa, arranged by artists like Giorgos Karvellos and the orchestra’s musical director Clio Zois.
After the interval, the programme turns to one of the cornerstones of the orchestral repertoire: Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 — a work of monumental energy and profound expression that traces a journey from struggle to triumph.
