Azymuth
More than 50 years ago, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro, the completely new sound of the jazz fusion trio Azymuth was heard for the first time. Since then, the trio has recorded more than 30 albums and gained worldwide recognition with their self-proclaimed samba doido (“crazy samba”), a distinctive fusion of jazz-funk, samba, and electronics. With their latest album Marca Passo (2025, Far Out Recordings), Azymuth celebrates five decades in music. Bassist Alex Malheiros, together with keyboardist Dudu Viana and drummer Renato Massa, keeps the trio sounding as vibrant as ever, driven by the same cosmic energy and masterful virtuosity that have defined Azymuth from the very beginning. The trio remains true to the formula that has made them irresistible for half a century: a whole greater than the sum of its parts and a groove that sets everything in motion.
