Nighttime (Michel Lorand)

Nighttime

Michel Lorand

Nighttime is built around the free improvisation of Belgian baritone saxophonist Hanne De Backer. The film’s structure is based on a five-minute musical motif, that is played, recorded, and replayed in the following shot through a large loudspeaker on a stand, visible on screen. The process repeats five times, before the motif gradually fades and returns to a solo, as at the beginning—a final solo in which the memory of the ten preceding musical passages resonates.
