MAD Architects
Lunch with an Architect
Born in Beijing in 1975, Ma Yansong is recognized as one of the leading voices of the new generation of architects. The first Chinese architect to win a landmark project abroad (LUCAS in Los Angeles), he is driven by a vision of the city of the future centered on the spiritual and emotional needs of its inhabitants. In his view, architecture cannot be merely functional; it must evoke a feeling, a memory, an emotion.
Within this context, he seeks to establish a balance between people, the city, and the environment. He develops a futuristic, organic, and technologically advanced architecture that embodies a contemporary interpretation of the Eastern relationship with nature. His projects challenge right angles, rigid layouts, and standardized façades. He advocates for a softer, more poetic, more spiritual urbanism, expressed in projects such as the Fenix Museum in Rotterdam, the UNIC residential complex in Paris, the Tunnel of Light in Japan, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, and the Shenzhen Bay Cultural Park in China, which he will present in Brussels along with other works.
