Music Chapel Festival : Beethoven
The Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel Festival is devoting this year's festival to the great master Beethoven. It was an easy choice to put his Third Symphony on the programme in this anniversary year in memory of Napoleon: the work was first dedicated to Bonaparte, until he decided to crown himself emperor. Beethoven angrily tore up his commission and named the work "Sinfonia Eroica, composed to celebrate the memory of a great man". Beethoven’s fifth piano concerto, the Emperor Concerto is one of his greatest masterpieces: original, imaginative – and extremely difficult.
