In 1810, a downcast poet, depressed by the mockery of his work and by the failure of his love life, seeks a partner for a suicide pact. In Henriette, a married woman enthralled after reading The Marquise of O, he finds his muse. From this premise (drawing liberally on the destiny of Heinrich von Kleist) which could serve to create an ardent romantic drama, Jessica Hausner, faithful to the character and the era, creates a film as only she can – refined and aloof, filmed entirely in static shots. A noble and fascinating successor to Lourdes.
