Three years after their gastronomical road movie around the North of England (The Trip, also directed by Winterbottom) Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon undertake a similar commission from The Observer in Italy. In six stages from Piedmont to Campanile they take in the culinary delights, which they season with their off kilter, sarcastic, admiring, and even plainly absurd commentary. An adventure driven by improvisation, composed of unscripted dialogue, alloying humour and intimacy in a meandering, unstructured mix, suffused with farce, maxims, and aphorisms. Feeding their narcissism, the actors take their conversational joy on the road.
