Gao Xingjian

A Writers’ Europe

The novelist, playwright and painter Gao Xingjian (1940) is considered an avant-garde writer and a pioneer of absurdist drama in his country (see Signal Alarm, 1982 and Bus Stop, 1983). Openly critical of the Beijing regime (see The Primitive, 1985 and The Other Shore, 1986), he left China and became a French citizen in 1998. Gao Xingjian was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2000. His paintings are currently on show in Brussels, at the Museum of Ixelles and the Royal Museums of Fine Arts. During an exceptional evening in Studio 1 he will talk about his life and work.
