Joachim Caffonnette Quintet
Young Belgian Jazz : Album releases
In 2011, the Belgian jazz pianist Joachim Caffonnette formed a band with musicians he met in the Royal Conservatory of Brussels: Laurent Barbier, Florent Jeunieaux, Yann Dumont, Hugo Antunes. The band played a number of shows and qualified for the finals of the Dinant Jazz Night Young Talent Contest. In 2012, they became “resident artists” in the famous Sounds Jazz Club in Brussels, where many successful projects at both national and international levels were born. During the 2012-2013 season, they played there once a month.
After that first season, Joachim decided to change the rhythm section and engaged two well-experienced Italian musicians: Armando Luongo (drums) and Daniele Cappucci (double bass). The owner of the Sounds Jazz Club offered them to play another season at the rate of two concerts every month. That same year (2013) they were selected for the artist support program “Ca Balance” of the Belgian province of Liège. That gave them the opportunity to record an EP. The EP was presented during a series of 11 concerts in Spring 2014, including Belgian festivals Jazz à Liège, Open Jazz Festival, Gare au Jazz...
This release received a warm welcome from the audience and the press. In February 2015, the band was chosen as one of the 3 finalists of the STORM contest (among 40 candidates) in the Belgian seaside town Ostend. In March and April 2015, the band gave a series of concert in several jazz clubs before entering the studio to record their first album Simplexity, released on AZ production (Talia asbl).
