Beethoven’s piano concerti form, together with the symphonies, the heart of his orchestral repertory. And just like the symphonies, they undergo a development from late-classical (1 and 2) to the heroic, brilliant and early-romantic concerto (3, 4, 5 and the Triple Concerto). They - just like the nine symphonies - form a corpus and it is therefore logical that many pianists strive to perform them as a cycle.
During the first five years of its existence, Le Concert Olympique systematically performed these concertos with renowned soloists such as Frank Braley, Till Fellner, François-Fréderic Guy and Boris Giltburg. This contributed to the development of the orchestra’s own personal performance style. After the successful March 2013 tour with famous Beethoven pianist Till Fellner, the idea to organise a communal Beethoven cycle, spread out over three productions and three concert seasons, began to grow. This production begins with Concertos No. 1 and No. 3, allowing the tonally similar, yet simultaneously contrasting pieces (in C major and C minor) to confront one another.
Soloist Till Fellner (born 1972 in Vienna) has already built an impressive career as a concert pianist performing with the most renowned orchestras in the world. He has been a guest at prestigious festivals and played concerts throughout the whole of Europe, South America and the United States. Beethoven’s music is a continuing theme throughout his international career.
