Deep suffering and contentment: Schubert at his best
‘When I want to sing about love I find myself singing about suffering. But as soon as I want to sing about suffering it turns into a song about love.’ Thus lamented Schubert: his genius as an alchemist-musician transformed love into pain, fusing opposing emotions. The British baritone Simon Keenlyside has put together an eclectic and original programme to pay tribute to this palette of Schubertian feelings. His programme includes compositions based on texts by Metastasio, such as L’incanto degli occhi, right up to his final lieder, including the poignant ‘Abschied’ (Farewell) from Schwanengesang, which was published posthumously. We have not had a chance to hear Simon Keenlyside on our stage since 2008, so it is a real privilege to follow him, once again, through this romantic landscape where narrative follows introspection and suffering gives way to peaceful happiness.
