Rachmaninoff composed his First Trio Élégiaque when he was nineteen years old. At the sound of the first notes, one immediately recognizes the compelling passion of his latter music. The trio is connected in its form to the Piano Trio written by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff's mentor. With his Trio, Tchaikovsky wanted to honor the pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, who had recently died at the time. Although Rubinstein had so harshly criticized his Piano Concerto a few years before, Tchaikovsky showed no resentment and composed this beautiful tribute to his memory.
