Prokofiev wrote his famous Second Violin Sonata (better known as the Sonata for Flute and Piano) in the years 1942-1943, after his flight from Moscow as a result of the German invasion. Also on the programme, another ‘Russian classic’, the Quintet by Glazunov, who was Shostakovich’s teacher and a composer and whose musical style incorporates characteristics from late romanticism as well as from 20th century modernism.
