Lorenzo Gatto, Julien Libeer
Beethoven violin sonatas
Beethoven was the very first composer to elevate the piano from its former role of accompanying instrument, giving it a new position equivalent to the violin. For example, he chose to name his violin sonatas as “Sonatas for piano and violin” rather than of “Sonatas for violin and piano”, thereby emphasizing the importance of this instrument within the music piece. During this opening concert of the festival, Lorenzo Gatto and Julien Libeer interpret three of the Sonatas, ending the evening with the famous Kreutzer Sonata.
