Separation of politics and religion: between particularism and universal vocation

Dominique Schnapper is a French sociologist and political scientist. She is ‘Directrice d’études’ of l’École des hautes études en sciences sociales and was a member of the Constitutional Council from 2001 to 2010. She is known for her work on the sociology of social and national integration, on the Jewish identity in modernity, on the immigration policy, on the relationship between the individual and the universal, and on citizenship in the democratic nation. She is the author of several groundbreaking books such as La Communauté des citoyens: sur l'idée moderne de nation (1994) and – her last work – L'esprit démocratique des lois (2014).
