Vita Brevis + Dimanche

Unreleased | Speechless (or almost) | Le Week-End du Doc

For more than thirty years, Thierry Knauff has managed to accomplished a series of cinematographic works which present a unique and instantly recognizable style: a thorough use of black & white, a soundtrack of incredible musicality and a refined mastery regarding film editing. In January 2016, Les Cahiers du Cinéma described Vita Brevis, Knauff’s latest feature, as "one of the most beautiful films of the past year". Vita Brevis is a magnificent ode to nature and to life. As accompanying film, Thierry Knauff chose Dimanche of Edmond Bernhard. Two cinematographic poems, each singularly distinct, joined together in a program of rare beauty.

Vita Brevis

Millions of mayflies emerge wondrously above the River Tisza, while an afternoon out of a child's life passes by. Vita Brevis is a poem of the moment, an evocation of the fragile and ephemeral dance of life.

Dimanche

Dimanche should have been a commissioned film on the 'problem' of free time. Parallel to his near contemporaries – Resnais in Marienbad or Meyer in Fleur Maigre – Edmond Bernhard frees himself of the theme and transcends the ordinary trouble of a big city (Brussels) to suggest the emptiness of existence. A major achievement of Belgian cinema, sustained by the sizzling percussion of Fernand Schirren
