Alban Berg’s compelling violin concerto Dem Andenken eines Engels (‘To the memory of an angel’) is a sort of requiem for Manon Gropius, the daughter of Alma Mahler and Berg’s good friend Walter Gropius, whom Alma married after Mahler’s death. The girl died of polio at the age of 18.
