Although the western musical tradition has detached itself from its ecclesiastical cradle, religious texts and the mysticism of faith remain a source of inspiration for many composers.
Thus Stravinsky chose the Laudate Dominum from Psalm 150 for his Symphony of Psalms. For the deeply religious James MacMillan, it was not the psalms but the rosary that served as inspiration for his 3rd Piano Concerto: a lively, charming and at times ethereal work.
