Prokofiev : War Sonatas
Piano
Sergueï Prokofiev conceived the three so-called “war sonatas” as an immense form in eleven movements before returning to a more traditional structure. The gigantic sound which is so characteristic for these pieces is combined with Prokofiev’s early style: hard, stormy, sometimes even brutal. However, the composer lets some lyrical respite break through, while avoiding the Rachmaninovian sentimentalism he despises.
