Andrzej Wajda, icon of international cinema, passed away in October. His final offering is the biography of Wladyslaw Strzeminski, whose avant-garde paintings violated the strict codes of Socialist Realism and earned him constant harassment from the Stalinist regime. Clear parallels can be read between the lines of this masterful final work with the difficult political circumstances under which Wajda himself made many of his films, all the more remarkable for it.
