Pompoko

Pom Poko is the sound that tanuki – Japanese raccoon dogs – make drumming their own bellies. But a tanuki is also a magical forest spirit. With a powerful environmental message, Pom Poko condemns the destruction of the Tama Hills ecosystem in the 1970s, when forests, hills and farms were razed to the ground for a vast housing development project. A film from the Studio Ghibli stable, it topped the Japanese box office in 1994.
