Getting smaller : Perspectives on a shrinking Europe / Conference

European dream in times of crisis

The European dream today, weighed down by the crisis, is more like a nightmare. The creation of a single market, and the Euro, aimed to stimulate growth and boost the European economy, thus bolstering European political power. But the crisis is now threatening European integration, and it seems that the hope of forging a European identity is losing ground to resurgent national identities, to a patriotism founded on anti-immigration and anti-European sentiment. Jeremy Rifkin, author of The European Dream: How Europe’s Vision of the Future is Quietly Eclipsing the American Dream (2004), and Rajeev Bhargava, eminent Indian professor of political theory, with his view of Europe’s status as seen from Asia and the USA, will hold a debate on the European dream today. Moderated by Mia Doornaert from De Standaard.
