Echoes on paper

In addition to his exhibition, Pieter Fannes will also mingle with the crowds to try and capture attitudes and ambiance. Don’t rush off as soon as the concerts finish and you’ll be able to take a look at some of his work on display at both Flagey and Marni.

For a number of years, illustrator Pieter Fannes has been touring Belgium’s jazz festivals armed with paints and a brush. Surrounded by his equipment on a chair by the stage, he has been trying to ’commit’ the music to paper. Musicians, with their expressions, movements and concentration, fascinate him, as do the atmosphere of a good concert and the influence of music on his work. Whilst illustrating, he waits for the moment where he can be guided by the force of the music.
