Alain Badiou & Jean-Paul Gasparian

From modern to contemporary art, or the possibility of impossibility

Conference & recital

The perspective of the philosopher Alain Badiou on contemporary art is against the current dominant positions. While these try to show the link between art and the reality of capitalist societies, he stands out by highlighting the capacity of art to open new horizons beyond the constraints of our time, to confront the grip of the finite and of the modern sophism. A privileged witness to the great political, scientific and artistic ruptures of the last century, and a theorist of the categories of being, event, subject and truth, Alain Badiou will tell us how the art of the twentieth century, from modernism to contemporary, has navigated these events and how it will, in the future, open up the possibility of a revolutionary transformation of life.

Jean-Paul Gasparian, in addition to his exceptional artistic qualities, is characterized by a keen interest in philosophy, an interest that contributes to his artistic quest and his pianist career. His meeting with Alain Badiou, during the seminars of the École Normale Supérieure, allowed him to crystallize his reflections on the relationship between art and truth. Through this recital, a sort of dialogue with the philosopher Alain Badiou, Jean-Paul Gasparian will invite us to a journey, passing by Chopin, Rachmaninov, Debussy and Messiaen. A perfect punctuation to this reflection on art.
