Ysaÿe & his friends

While Guillaume Lekeu began composing his keyboard quartet, commissioned by Eugène Ysaÿe, he contracted typhoid fever, which took a toll on him; the young composer was only 24 years old at the time. The Quartet for piano, violin, viola and cello, which begins with a painful outburst, is one of the composer's most powerful and profound works. Regarding this matter, he wrote the famous sentence: "I am killing myself by putting all my soul into my music".
